Common Core Elementary Content

Attached is a document which stipulates what elementary candidates are required to take.  Below are meeting notes highlighting changes we are making to the Core and departmental proposals and other new documents that communicate these changes.

In the November departmental meeting, the faculty voted to make changes to the Education core.  These changes are noted in the attached document below.  To highlight, the department voted to reinstate the world language requirement, to include a U.S. History required course along with a World History requirement, to include one philosophy course, two courses from a listing of two economics (students can take one of two), one communication, two sociology and two political science (students can take one of two) and to limit students to only one fine arts requirement in their core.  This adds six courses to the core and removes one (five fewer general studies requirements providing only surface knowledge).  Below is the proposal.

DEPARTMENT OF TEACHER EDUCATION

The Undergraduate Program Core Requirements (Course Recommendations)

The Core is being revised.  Below are departmental agenda items and official departmental documents leading to changes in the Undergraduate Elementary Core.  The revised document Core Course Listing document is from November 2013.

Dr. John Baer, professor in Department of Teacher Education, has proposed a decrease in the number of second majors elementary candidates can choose.  This change will allow for candidates to be more highly qualified in key academic areas such as mathematics, science, English Language Arts, social studies, world language, etc.  Below is the agenda item proposal.
